Meet Caroline Ntonkwa, the visionary behind Hocan Holdings – a leader who turned a childhood in business, a detour in IT, and a passion for people into one of Kenya’s most practical HR and Business Consultancy firms.
Born in Business
Caroline was born into a business-oriented family. While other children spent school holidays playing, she spent hers immersed in the running of the family business. She watched, she learned, she served customers, she counted stock. Out of that early immersion, a passion was born – a passion for running business the right way.
In campus, she followed a different path – IT. It was logical, it was marketable, but it wasn’t her. She quickly realized her heart wasn’t in code, it was in commerce, in people, in building things that work. So she made a bold decision to step off that path and step into Business Development.
She excelled, but even then, she felt there was more she could do. More she was meant to build.
The First Leap: 2014
In 2014, Caroline opened her first business in the service industry. She ran it with a level of organization and structure that clients couldn’t help but notice.
Your business is so organized. Who set up your systems?"
That question would change everything.
Mr Githaiga-HR Director Scania East Africa Ltd, a company in the vehicle assembling industry, was so impressed with Caroline's people skills that he introduced her to a friend who owned a chain of supermarkets. The business had a workforce of nearly 1,000 people but was struggling with structure. Caroline was therefore, brought in to put the business in order.
In just 6 months, she built systems from scratch, drafted employee contracts, led staff training, and aligned the entire team with the core objectives of the business. Six months later, the business was completely turned around.
It was proof of what she had always known: Businesses don’t fail for lack of effort. They fail for lack of systems.
From Service to Systems and People
Caroline returned to running her own business, but her reputation for fixing businesses was growing. A family member soon introduced her to a client in the gaming industry who was pivoting and needed someone who could align HR, logistics, and business operations directly with the CEO’s vision.
She joined as a HR Manager and Business Development Assistant to the CEO – all while still running her own venture.
Realizing she needed formal grounding in her natural strength – people – she enrolled for a Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management in 2014, the same year she was transforming businesses on the ground.
The Birth of Hocan Holdings Limited: 2015
In that intersection of experience, Caroline saw a clear gap.
Many businesses, especially in the hospitality industry, needed more than just an HR person or a business consultant. They needed someone who thought like a business owner AND like a people person. Someone who understood profit and people in equal measure. Hocan was built to be that bridge.
While Hocan ran in the background, Caroline continued working across industries — including with brands like Zitron Limited, Geothermal Development Company (GDC), Tecno Edge Africa, MOYO Casino and EZO Restaurant — mastering the real operational challenges of the service industry.
In 2022, she made the decision to give Hocan its full chance to thrive, cutting a clear niche for it in the hospitality sector and beyond.
